Week 26 - Rings!

More physio yesterday, and as I got a little bored at work I went to the gym earlier and hopped on the airbike for a while before I saw him. I was only going to do 5 minutes to warm up my shoulders, but some showoff got on the bike next to me after a few minutes and was sprinting and then stopping, so I increased speed and stayed on until he left. 10 minutes at more of a pace than I really wanted. Can't help my competitive side unfortunately.

After that went to the rings and the bands to stretch, and then up for the physio appointment. We went straight back down to the gym. Hmmm. Was kind of hoping for a lazy session where I just got to lie down and get manipulated, but hey ho.

He's added two more exercises  incline press-ups with my hands on a bench, and then utterly insane ring rows. So basically I'm hanging off the rings, back to the ground, straight body and my feet on the floor and pulling myself up to the rings. Surprising how strong I actually was here - started a way out and quite upright, and then came in closer and almost lying down to make it harder.

Then the best part. I mentioned in passing that I wanted to hang off the rings, thinking I'd be told that was daft. Nope, let's try. So I did. First squatting and taking my feet off the floor, then kneeling and sinking down. He got me to move my pelvis forward and pull my shoulder blades back, which made it hurt a bit more. But I could do it! My arms were pretty much up next to my head, and it felt great to have my shoulder joint pulled up like that and take weight. Unfortunately didn't have my phone with me, so no photo.

Then back for some massage, and my bicep was really, really unhappy. It didn't care for the pilates the day before, and didn't like the rowing and pressups after that, and probably didn't like the hanging much either.

Today I went back to the gym, and did the glute work, and then some stretching with the rings again, then the airbike for 25 minutes. And it turns out that yes, this week has been too much. Holding a cup of tea in my left hand this afternoon, my arm just lost all strength and dropped. Only just managed to grab the tea in my right hand. Since then, it doesn't like to take weight, and is crampy and unhappy.

The plot thickened when I got home, and used the foam roller and little massage balls to get into my back. There are new spots on my back that when the ball rubs into them send a shot of pain into my bicep. Some in the middle of my back, and some in my trapezius. And the other thing that has happened, is the huge hard knot in my trap has gone. Well mostly, there is still some tightness/resistance there, but the knot is gone.

My neck is niggly, my arm hurts and doesn't want to even hold itself up, but I feel good. The plan *was* going to be upper body work at the gym tomorrow, and treadmill, but now I'm not sure about the upper body part. I'll see how I pull up tomorrow morning. (Update: pulled up fine today, after waking a few times in the night with pain in my shoulder, so was able to do upper body set at the gym, and treadmill for 25 minutes, then airbike intervals for just 5. Physio was there with another patient doing boxing type stuff, so hopefully wasn't noticing me and any bad form)

Generally huge, unexpected improvements, and looking back over the month to the initial appointment with this physio, to where I am now, I truly cannot believe it. My movement is beyond anything I hoped for, and I'm getting stronger and fitter. Not seeing him again til Monday, so a few more runs, gym sessions, and pilates to get through before then. Hopefully he'll be impressed with the movement, and hopefully the knot does not return (Update, so far it isn't back much, just a little bit).

Week 2 (Day 9) - Bruises and restrictions

Over the next week the bruising really came out. Tramadol made the pain sort of bearable, and the diazepam kept the spasms under control for the most part. Standing up, getting in or out of bed, sitting down, all still caused spasms, but at least the random spasms had stopped. If I could keep moving the spasms didn't happen, but any time I sat for more than 15 minutes, they would build. I also had to sit in a dining chair, with cushions to keep my back upright. Sofas or armchairs weren't possible as they required me to lean back, which I couldn't do. I had given work the good news that I wasn't back for at least 2 weeks, and called the health fund, who confirmed that they covered my surgeon and his consultations.  I also called the private hospital and they got me an appointment with him for Tuesday 19th June. My mother returned home, but my sister came to cook for me on Sunday, and I had Ocado deliver my groceries while she was there to unpack and carry things. I c...

Week 25 - Knee improvements

Up and out running this morning. 5.7 kms, with one split of 9.20 which for me is fast. I did the ITB exercises first, and then headed out. No knee pain today, just a bit of a niggle but this time slightly below my knee. Lovely morning for a run, and the ground was quite spongey so easy to run on. Had a slight run in with a chihuahua that was smaller than my foot, and had to resist the temptation to loft it skywards, but luckily its legs were too tiny to keep up with me for long. I did the NHS leg exercises, clam shells, fire hydrants and stretching when I got back. Legs are certainly feeling it now, but my knee feels ok, and I had no trouble keeping running to the end, so I didn't lose any running fitness after just doing bike during the week. I will attempt treadmill again this week, possibly just once though. Have physio tomorrow, and might ask for more shoulder / back / arm exercises. I feel the need to get them toned up and strong. I also realise I will be seeing Mr Shoul...

Week 14 (Day 99) - Let's throw another fall into the mix

Walking fast and London pavements are a bad mix, apparently. I caught my toe on a raised edge of concrete paving and at first thought I would just stagger a bit, and then momentum caught up and I realised I was going to fly. There was a moment when time stood still and I tried to decide which side to fall on - the broken left shoulder, or the broken right hand? Unfortunately, I wasn't quick enough, and landed on both palms, and my right knee. Some very kind people came rushing over to help, including one who said he was a physio. He helped me up, and asked me to move my hands around, and then lift my arms out to the side. Poor guy got quite panicked when I couldn't with my left, until I mentioned I was recovering from a broken shoulder. Then he got more panicked and said I needed to go to hospital and get x-rays. Nope, not quite ready to spend more time with the NHS just yet. My right knee was grazed and bleeding through my jeans. I proceeded (more cautiously) to work,...
